L Shape Lot to Bring Rocking Honky Tonk to Rives, Oct. 5

1 Oct

Over the past decade, L Shape Lot has played countless concerts in the Southeast. Saturday night’s show at Rives Theatre – a movie-house-turned-music-venue in uptown Martinsville – will join an ever-growing list of unique venues for this hard working band.

“We’ve played bars, churches, bowling alleys, hardware stores,” said lead singer Eric Miller recently. “We play sports bars where nobody’s listening. We play theatres. We play festivals. You name it, man, we’ve done it. After playing 11 years, man, I’ve played funerals. I’ve played ‘em all.”

Miller (guitar/vocals) and John Kovalski (drums/vocals) founded L Shape Lot in 2002 in Wilmington, N.C. Current bandmates Alex Lanier (electric guitar/vocals) and Rick Williams (electric bass/vocals) joined eight years ago, and they’ve been making a unique brand of rocking honky-tonk music ever since.

“If you were to take classic country, bluegrass and rock and roll and sort of mix it all together, man, that’s us,” said Miller. “It’s all pretty much high energy with three- and four-part harmonies.”

Past winners of FloydFest’s Under the Radar band competition, L Shape Lot plays two or three times per week from March through November, not counting the “L Shape Duo” shows that Miller and Lanier perform on the side. In the last year, the full band has played onstage with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Sam Bush.

It’s clear they have fun performing, but Miller and his bandmates take their craft very seriously.

“I’m closer to 40 than I am to 30. There’s no more sex drugs and rock and roll. We’re kind of old and boring,” he said with a laugh. “When I leave a place, I want the management to say, ‘Man, those guys are serious about what they do.’ And the other thing, I really want the crowd to have fun. I want them to leave there and say, ‘Man, that show was a blast.’”

Martinsville native Riggs Roberson, a blues/rock guitarist and singer, will open Saturday night’s show at 8:30 p.m.

Tickets are $8 in advance or $10 on show night. They can be purchased from Woodall’s Music & Sound or the Daily Grind. Live at the Rives Theatre Series passes will also be accepted.
